the internet of things

Based on the amount of technological devices in the apartment – I would definitely lose to a battle if they were to band together with sentience.

It really got me thinking how I depend on my devices communicating with each other in their little networks, which resembles the concept of the Internet of Things.

a little diagram

I think compared to many, the amount of devices connected to the internet is quite average – with a mobile, laptop, smart TV and gaming consoles. But, what would life look like if all my devices were ‘smart‘? Would life be easier with a chip planted into my chair to sell data to IKEA? Or a fridge that could talk and take note of my constant inflow of avocado to report to mortgage brokers targeting Gen Z?

For this week, I decided to list devices that exist online based on my own convenience and would probably make good data.

  1. Hi Paige,

I loved reading your blogpost! I always thought this topic was so interesting, I loved learning about this as well because I came across a few really interesting videos that I related to this lecture too.

Firstly, I was watching a normal gaming video by JackSepticeye and he was discussing whilst he was playing Watch Dogs Legion which is such an interesting game (tempted to get it myself). Anyways he discussed one day in the future will we have to update our houses because it will be linked to the internet..will we be locked out until we finish the update…My point to add is if we have ‘smart houses’ will people be able to hack it easier…for some reason what he said about having to update our houses was like holy crap this could really happen! But isn’t that interesting…imagine that we obviously might have a lot more customisation with things if everything in our house is smart but at what cost would this come with for us…

The other video I wanted to mention was something I shared recently on twitter and this youtuber called ‘Disrupt’ spent a full week in VR. He never took the headset off he slept, ate and breathed VR. He discussed how one day we will have a pair of futuristic VR glasses that will allow us to be anywhere at anytime. So I wonder for you, considering that you wished you had smart technology would you ever want a smart house or a smart pair of glasses that reminds you that you have an appointment at 3pm?

I do wonder how much of our personal data we would give away if everything around us was smart. From our beds, toilets, fridges, cars, lights, electricity. Hmmm I am interested to see where the future of technology will take us. But thank you for this great blogpost. So many interesting points that made me think about my own experiences watching YouTube this week!

If you want to check our the videos I mentioned they are linked below:

Video (Disrupt – A week in VR): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGRY14znFxY

Enjoy the videos! Hope you have a great night!

  2. Hey Paige,

Your diagram exploring what the ‘loT’ is simple, eye-catching and insightful. Moreover, your blog post this week exploring how our data is literally connected to all of devices and technology we own which is absolutely terrifying. Also linking the wired article adds more information on what the internet of things is, which enhances your blog post even more. Your remediation of things which pre-exist but if these added features which you mentioned existed how it would benefit consumers. Furthermore, over on my blog this week I examined Samsungs concept of ‘smart homes’ when literally everything is available to the consumer with a simple tap of a button on your phone app, which is ridiculously crazy to believe this is a thing. Like will technology/ data eventually take over humanity?

  3. Hey, Paige! Loved this blog post and I really love your remediations this week. It’s funny that you mention the shoes in your final gif there, because I actually created a small podcast-style remediation this week focusing on the weird smart home products available on the market at the moment, and surprisingly, the shoes were actually there! There was a whole list of them which are far too expensive, honestly! I do really love how you explained the little networks which create the internet of things, that’s actually a super clear and concise way to explain it! Keep up the great work, Paige!
Oh, and here’s the link to those shoes, haha! https://www.nanalyze.com/2019/02/smart-shoes-digitally-connected/
